Handwire's solution required the development of several isolated application components involving Windows development, web services, .Net web applications, and client-side scripting. An innovative caching system allows the application to run across multiple servers and deliver high-performance versions of frequently requested interface components.

Through a combination of the client's initial inspiration, Scenic's creative vision, and Handwire's technical expertise, XSNSports.com was born. This extension of Microsoft's sports gaming experience allows users to create leagues and track Xbox game statistics through a sophisticated online interface. Stretching the latest capabilities of the .Net architecture to its limit, Handwire built a highly scalable, number crunching monster just as elegant in its design as the interface developed by Scenic to accompany it. |

One of the greatest challenges on this project was to develop a solution that handles a complex set of update and integration requirements without compromising patient usability. Handwire met this goal through close collaboration with fd2s throughout the Exploration and Design phases. During these phases, interfaces and prototypes of directions logic were developed and tested with patients. At the same time, Handwire worked with fd2s and M. D. Anderson to understand the unique requirements involved in providing dynamic directions through an ever changing physical environment. Handwire also worked with fd2s to understand the technical landscape of the institution and to seek out integration points including tie-ins with mainframe patient databases and existing space management systems. The Access Electronic Wayfinding System was modeled in M.D. Anderson's enterprise standard Oracle 9i platform and utilized Java to handle the complex business logic of determining dynamic directions. Flash MX 2004 was used to develop an object-oriented client kiosk application which could communicate with the server application through web services. 26 of these touchscreen kiosks were deployed around the campus. An administrative application allows M.D. Anderson to monitor the usage of kiosks and update wayfinding data across the campus in real-time. |

Working with design partner Scenic, Handwire once again delivered a solid set of backend features to complement Scenic's visual and interactive design. Using the color picker, shoppers can quickly engage the sense of sight in their search for the perfect towel. Visitors to the site can "Ask Lily" their bedding related questions, add products to a wish list, and participate in user polls. WestPoint Steven's site managers can update content, manage product listings, and respond to user inquiries through an easy-to-use content management system. WPS is thrilled with their site and has just completed a site redesign with Scenic complete with additional functionality provided by Handwire. |

The existing Texas Monthly homepage suffered from information overload. Editorial, advertising, and promotional information competed for the user's attention. Too much general information was being displayed.

The new design will be launched this winter.

|
Experts at IA and masters of simple, clean design, Handwire was brought onboard to solve the problem. First, we provided a content assessment aimed at making sense of the anarchy. Next, we developed a series of page architectures to further progress the information design. Inspired by the look of the magazine, we then utilized a similar pallette of grays to compose a visual design that emphasizes the important and leaves the rest of the page waiting quietly in the background. Finally, we brought the design to life using an XHTML, CSS, and DHTML structural design. This architecture reduced the filesize of the homepage to 38% of its original size. The new site is easily maintained by Texas Monthly staff. Because it is XHTML-compliant, it is accessible in any of today's browsers and will transition well to tomorrow's browsing devices. |
